History and Tradition behind Arab Male Head Scarves

A majority of Arab males wear a  keffiyeh  or shemagh. It is a traditional square cotton scarf, which they put on their heads and then hold it in place it with strong cord, known as agal . The keffiyeh, especially the white one , is also known as the ghutrah. This is particularly common in the Arabian Peninsula, where the optional skullcap is called a keffiyeh. The garment is also known in some areas as the ḥaṭṭah. However, there a many different ways a shemagh can be draped around the head. Each tribe, area or even country has its own traditional colours. In the UAE it is mostly white with a black agal. This varies for Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Bahrain, etc. Other popular choices for headdresses, for example in Oman, are the traditional spherical caps and cotton turbans.

The Middle East may have changed a lot in terms of technology and development. But when it comes to fashion, tradition and culture dominate the scene. For this reason Arabs take pride in maintaining their historical dress code.

The keffiyeh or kufiya also known as a ghutrah, shemagh , ḥaṭṭah , mashadah,  chafiye, dastmal yazdi or cemedanî  is a traditional Arabian headdress, that originated in the Arabian Peninsula, and is now worn throughout the Middle-East region. It is based on a square scarf, and is usually made of cotton, Kashmir Wool and Pashmina

Many Palestinian keffiyehs are blended cotton wool, which facilitates quick drying and brings warmth to wearer’s head. The keffiyeh is usually folded in half (into a triangle) and the fold worn across the forehead. Often, the keffiyeh is held in place by a circlet of rope called an agal . Some wearers wrap the keffiyeh into a turban, while others wear it loosely draped around the back and shoulders. A taqiyah is sometimes worn underneath the keffiyeh. The plain white keffiyeh is most popular in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf—in Kuwait and Bahrain to the exclusion of almost any other style.

In Jordan, the red and white keffiyeh is highly associated with the country and its heritage, because red color was introduced by the Jordanian Bedouins, where it is known as the shemagh mhadab. The Jordanian keffiyeh has decorative cotton or wool tassels on the sides; the bigger these tassels, the greater the garment’s value and the status of the person wearing it.In Egypt, the keffiyeh and the agal is worn by Bedouins specially in the Sinai Peninsula. It is also sometimes tied into a turban in varying styles.

In Yemen, the keffiyeh is used extensively in both red-white and black-white pattern. It spread during 1948 through Palestinian refugees.
